Standing…and Building…on the Word of God

We are building an addition onto the north side of John’s parents’ house so that they will have a ground level bedroom and bathroom.  John is also building an additional room so that when we move over to take care of them I will have someplace to homeschool the children without being constantly “underfoot”.  The foundation was poured Thursday and Friday of this past week.  As the cement was being poured Thursday, I felt God prompting me that we should dedicate this addition to the Lord in a more formal way.  We’ve been praying over it all along, but I felt like what God wanted us to do was to inscribe scripture in the cement so that all further building (and living) would be done on the firm foundation of His word.  John said that there would be more cement poured the next day and that would be the appropriate time to do so.  Everyone picked out scripture that was meaningful to them or felt was appropriate to the project.  I asked the boys to whittle a stylus that I could use to inscribe the verses.  When the time came, Mavis came out to watch (Edmund wasn’t feeling up to it at the time), the boys and John took turns reading the selected verses while I carved them in the quickly drying cement.  After we were done, John led us in prayer.  These are the verses we chose (all verses are in the NIV):Psalm 127:1 “Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.  Unless the Lord watches over a city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.”Proverbs 14:1 “The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.”1 Cor. 3:10-11 “By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it.  But each one should be careful how he builds.  For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”Psalm 86:11 “Teach me your way O Lord and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.”Lev. 11:45 “I am the Lord who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy because I am holy.”Eph. 6:1 “Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.”Ro. 12:1-3 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship.  Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.  For by the grace given me I say to every one of you:  Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.  Ro 8:38-39 “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”Col 3:23-24 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.  It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”2 Thes. 3:13 “And as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right.”John 14:2 “In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you.  I am going there to prepare a place for you.”  (Grandma got a good chuckle out of this one, since we are “preparing” 3 new rooms for them.)Matt. 7:24-29 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  The rain came down , the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.  But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.  When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching because he taught as one who had authority and not as their teachers of the law.”Mark 3:25 “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.”John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”1 Timothy 4:12 “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.”Ro. 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him who have been called according to his purpose.” (Later Edmund told me this was one of his favorite Bible verses and that he was glad it had been included.)
